Here Comes Suburbia

Liz Cockrum

Both of these photographs were made in the western suburbs of Chicago in 2005. Neither site exists today as it does in these images. The image on the top is now the site of a bank, and the image on the bottom, once a beautiful 24-acre field full of trees and wildflowers, is a big box hardware store. These photos are part of a series titled The Land Project, which documents changes to our landscape due to suburban sprawl. My purpose is to show what we are sacrificing to maintain our suburban lifestyles and, I hope, spur people to question the ramifications of unchecked development.
